Many different kinds of transportation services are available for shipping freight overseas. Depending on its point of origin or destination, a shipment may require more than one service. Let’s look at a typical scenario as an example.

A firm in Dallas, Texas has ordered a shipment of Japanese auto parts. Across the ocean in Japan, the parts are packed into crates and loaded into a shipping container. The shipping container is hoisted onto a trailer, the trailer is hitched to a flatbed truck, and the flatbed truck transports the loaded trailer to the port. At the port, giant cranes lift the shipping container off of the trailer and stack it amid a tower of similar containers on the deck of an ocean freighter waiting at dock. The flatbed truck and empty trailer depart, perhaps having a transportation services contract to pick up an inbound shipping container and transport it to a destination in Japan.

The auto parts are now bound overseas for the Port of Houston aboard the loaded ocean freighter. In due course, the vessel arrives at the port, where this time, the shipping container is lifted off the freighter and place on a flatbed rail car. The train heads north carrying the shipping container across Texas and into the Dallas rail yard. From there, a flatbed truck hauls the auto parts in their container to the buyer’s warehouse.
