Thanks to my son’s wanderlust, I have received a mini-lesson in air freight and freight forwarders during the last week. Here’s how my education got started. Charles is off on a “gap year” global adventure before he settles into a real job after college. He happens to be in central Asia right now. A few days ago, he sent an email begging me to ship his climbing gear because he had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to accompany a certain world-renowned expert on a climbing expedition. I started by contacting several shipping companies to learn what would be involved in sending the shipment to the other side of the world. The shipping company would arrange for air freight most of the way, and once the shipment arrived in the closest major city, they would work with freight forwarders to transport the shipment the rest of the way. The package is now on its way to Charles in China.
